本年も、日本患者由来がんモデル学会学術集会を開催できる運びとなりました。ご参加いただく皆さまに心より感謝申し上げます。日本患者由来がんモデル学会は、臨床検体を用いたがんモデルの樹立や応用に携わる研究者が、日々の研究成果や新たな発想を共有し、切磋琢磨するための場として設立されました。

　現在にいたるまで、細胞株やゼノグラフトなどのがんモデルは、がんの基礎研究およびトランスレーショナル研究の発展に不可欠な役割を果たしてきました。 21世紀に入り、がん研究を取り巻く状況は大きく変化しました。長年にわたり蓄積された研究成果と、臨床検体を用いた大規模かつ網羅的な解析により、がんの発生・進展に関する多くの魅力的な仮説が提示されています。それらの仮説を的確に検証するには、がんの臨床的多様性や分子背景を忠実に反映できる患者由来がんモデルの存在が不可欠です。さらに近年、臨床現場を大きく変革する分子標的薬や免疫チェックポイント阻害剤など、新しい抗がん剤が相次いで登場しています。これらの開発や臨床試験を効率的に推進し、実際の患者における奏効性を高精度に予測するためには、より臨床に近い特性を備えた新世代の患者由来がんモデルが求められています。

今回の学術集会のテーマは「21世紀の患者由来がんモデル」です。果たして、現代の研究や医療が求める高機能なモデルは十分に開発され、実用化されているのでしょうか。基礎から臨床、さらには産業応用まで、多様な視点からその現状と課題を明らかにし、未来への方向性を議論できる機会となることを願っております。

　本学術集会が、新たな知見の創出と研究者間の連携強化を促し、患者由来がんモデルのさらなる発展につながる場となりますことを心より期待しています。

Welcome Address from the Conference Chair:

It is my great pleasure to announce that we are once again able to hold the Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Patient-Derived Cancer Models this year. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all of you for your participation. The Society was established as a forum for researchers engaged in the establishment and application of cancer models derived from clinical specimens to share their daily research achievements and new ideas, and to inspire and challenge one another. 

To this day, cancer models such as cell lines and xenografts have played an indispensable role in the advancement of both basic cancer research and translational studies. Since the beginning of the 21st century, the environment surrounding cancer research has undergone significant change. The accumulation of many years of research, together with large-scale and comprehensive analyses of clinical specimens, has generated a wealth of compelling hypotheses regarding cancer initiation and progression. To rigorously validate these hypotheses, it is essential to have patient-derived cancer models that faithfully reproduce the clinical diversity and molecular background of human cancers. 

In recent years, we have also witnessed the rapid emergence of novel anticancer drugs—such as molecularly targeted agents and immune checkpoint inhibitors—that are transforming clinical practice. To facilitate the efficient development of these therapies and their clinical trials, and to accurately predict therapeutic responses in real patients, next-generation patient-derived cancer models with higher clinical relevance are urgently needed. 

The theme of this year’s meeting is “Patient-Derived Cancer Models in the 21st Century.” Are we truly developing and implementing high-performance models that meet the demands of modern research and clinical medicine? It is my hope that this meeting will serve as an opportunity to examine the current status and challenges of these models from diverse perspectives—ranging from basic research to clinical application and industrial translation—and to explore their future directions. 

I sincerely hope that this Annual Meeting will foster the creation of new knowledge, strengthen collaborations among researchers, and contribute to the further advancement of patient-derived cancer models. Chairperson Tadashi Kondo
